Maurizio Mariani, born on February 25, 1982 in Rome, Italy, is a football referee who has gained recognition in national and international competitions. He debuted in the Italian Serie A in 2013 and has since officiated numerous matches in the top tier of Italian football.
In 2022, Mariani made his debut in the UEFA Champions League, expanding his experience in European competitions. Additionally, he was selected to referee in the 2024 Copa América, being the only European referee in the tournament, as part of a cooperation agreement between CONMEBOL and UEFA.
His refereeing style is characterized by strict enforcement of the rules, which has led him to make controversial decisions in some matches. For instance, in November 2024, during a match between Inter Milan and Napoli, Mariani awarded a controversial penalty to Inter, resulting in his temporary relegation to Serie B as a disciplinary measure.
