About Fernando Echenique

Fernando Gabriel Echenique, born on August 31, 1980 in San Justo, Buenos Aires, is an Argentine referee with over a decade of experience in the Primera División. His official debut took place on June 12, 2011, when he officiated a match between Boca Juniors and Banfield, stepping in as a substitute for the main referee, Alejandro Toia, who was injured. This match also marked the emotional goodbye of Martín Palermo at La Bombonera.

Echenique has been appointed to numerous important matches in the Liga Profesional de Fútbol and other national competitions, including the Copa Argentina. He has refereed high-profile derbies, such as the La Plata classic between Estudiantes and Gimnasia, although he has not been immune to controversies. In 2023, before that derby, he had to dispel rumors about a supposed origin in La Plata, publicly clarifying that he was born in San Justo.

Recognized for his professionalism, Echenique has maintained a constant presence in the elite of Argentine football, being selected for high-stakes matches, where his experience and character have been crucial.
