José María Sánchez Martínez, born on October 3, 1983 in Lorca, Murcia, is a Spanish football referee who has excelled in La Liga since his debut in 2015. In addition to his refereeing career, he is an economist and works as a bank employee.
He began his refereeing career in 2000, gradually climbing up from lower categories to establish himself in the elite of Spanish refereeing. In 2017, he was appointed as a FIFA referee, allowing him to officiate international matches and be considered an elite referee by UEFA.
He has officiated multiple high-profile matches, including several 'Clásicos' between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. His first Clásico was the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup in 2017, where Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 2-0. To date, he has refereed seven Clásicos, with a balanced record of three wins for each team and one draw.
In the October 2024 Clásico, held at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, Sánchez Martínez was at the center of controversy due to refereeing decisions that were criticized by Real Madrid. The Madrid club, through its official channel, expressed its discontent over the non-awarding of several penalties they deemed clear, sparking intense debate in the sports media.
Throughout his career, he has been involved in various controversies, especially in high-tension matches. His strict style and decisive decisions have been the subject of debate, but his ability to handle high-profile matches has also been highlighted.
