Miguel Ángel Ortiz Arias, born on November 23, 1984 in Madrid, Spain, is a football referee who has had a notable career in Spanish refereeing. He began his refereeing career at the age of 16 in the Royal Madrid Football Federation, quickly ascending to the Segunda División B, where he officiated 142 matches over a decade.
In 2019, Ortiz Arias was promoted to the Segunda División, where he refereed 63 matches over two seasons. His performance earned him a promotion to the Primera División in the 2021-2022 season, making his debut on August 14, 2021 in a match between CA Osasuna and RCD Espanyol that ended in a 0-0 draw.
During his time in the top category, he has been the main referee in 59 matches, showing a total of 176 yellow cards and 11 red cards, and awarding 11 penalties. His work was recognized by receiving the Guruceta Trophy for the best referee in the Primera División in the 2021-2022 season.
However, his career has not been without controversies. In October 2023, Girona FC player David López accused him of “bad manners and arrogance” during a match against Almería. Additionally, in May 2023, during a match between Real Valladolid and Sevilla FC, Ortiz Arias was criticized for blowing the end of the first half while the ball was in the air, resulting in the disallowance of a goal for Valladolid.
