About Mateo Busquets Ferrer

Mateo Busquets Ferrer, born on October 31, 1993 in Palma de Mallorca, is a Spanish referee currently officiating in the Spanish La Liga. His rise in the world of refereeing has been notably rapid. After a single season in the Second Division in 2022-2023, where he officiated 24 games, he was promoted to the top category in the 2023-2024 season. In his first year in La Liga, he officiated 20 matches, showing 109 yellow cards and 7 red cards.

One of his most outstanding performances took place in the Madrid derby between Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid in September 2024. During this match, Busquets Ferrer suspended the game for 15 minutes due to objects being thrown from the stands towards goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. This decision was widely praised for his composure and handling of the situation.

Regarding his refereeing style, Busquets Ferrer is characterized by his serenity and firmness. He has stated that he tries to be as versatile as possible, adapting to the circumstances of each match and player. This managerial ability has allowed him to earn the trust of the players in a short period of time.

Despite his relative inexperience at the top level, he has demonstrated a remarkable ability to handle high-pressure matches, which bodes well for a promising future in Spanish refereeing.
