The Estadio Alberto José Armando, popularly known as La Bombonera, is the iconic home of Club Atlético Boca Juniors, located in the neighborhood of La Boca, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Inaugurated on May 25, 1940, this stadium has become a symbol of Argentine and world football.
Its architectural design, created by architects José Luis Delpini, Viktor Sulčič, and Raúl Bes, features a unique shape resembling a box of chocolates, hence its nickname "La Bombonera". This distinctive structure, with three levels of stands on three sides and a fourth almost vertical wall with boxes, contributes to exceptional acoustics, intensifying the passion and fervor of fans during matches.
With a capacity of approximately 54,000 spectators, La Bombonera has witnessed countless historic moments, including Boca Juniors' first international titles such as the Copa Libertadores and the Intercontinental Cup in the 1970s. Apart from its role as a football stadium, it has served as a venue for concerts by renowned international artists, establishing itself as a cultural icon in Buenos Aires.
Although officially named Alberto José Armando since 2000, in honor of the president who led the club during two terms, most people still refer to the stadium simply as "La Bombonera". This nickname originated when architect Viktor Sulčič compared the stadium's shape to a box of chocolates he had received as a gift.
