Throughout its history, Mendizorroza has undergone several renovations, the most significant being in 1999, when the stands in the corners were expanded to reach its current capacity. This stadium has witnessed memorable moments, such as the outstanding campaign of Alavés in the UEFA Cup 2000-2001, where the team reached the final against Liverpool in an exciting match that ended 5-4 in favor of the English.
Located at Paseo de Cervantes, s/n, 01007 Vitoria-Gasteiz, the stadium is part of a sports complex that includes municipal swimming pools, athletic tracks, and frontons, establishing itself as a sports hub in the city. In addition, in 2019, it was recognized for having the “best pitch” in LaLiga Santander, a testament to the care and dedication to the maintenance of its facilities.
Mendizorroza has hosted matches of the Basque National Football Team, including a match in 1980 against Hungary and another in 2018 against Venezuela. Furthermore, the stadium is known for its friendly and welcoming atmosphere, where fans, known as “babazorros,” create a unique atmosphere that makes every match a special experience.
