Selhurst Park is the football stadium located in Selhurst, in the London district of Croydon, which serves as the home of Crystal Palace Football Club since its opening in 1924. Designed by the Scottish architect Archibald Leitch, the stadium was built at an approximate cost of £30,000 and officially opened its doors on August 30, 1924. In addition to hosting Crystal Palace matches, Selhurst Park has been the venue for international fixtures, including games during the 1948 Olympics, and has shared its pitch with clubs like Charlton Athletic and Wimbledon in different periods.
In 2018, the club announced plans for a significant redevelopment of Selhurst Park, focusing on the reconstruction of the Main Stand. This project, valued between £75 and £100 million, aims to increase the stadium's capacity to 34,000 spectators and equip it with modern facilities, including a new glass facade inspired by the historic Crystal Palace from the Great Exhibition of 1851. Although construction was initially expected to start in 2019, various delays, including the COVID-19 pandemic, postponed the beginning. Finally, in August 2024, the project was approved by the Croydon Council, and work is expected to be completed by summer 2027.
An interesting fact is that Selhurst Park has been used as a location for the TV series “Ted Lasso”, depicting the fictional stadium of AFC Richmond. Additionally, the stadium is renowned for its vibrant atmosphere on match days, thanks to the passionate support of Crystal Palace fans, making it one of the most iconic venues in English football.
