St. James’ Park is an iconic football stadium located in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Opened in 1892, it has been the home of Newcastle United Football Club since its foundation. With a current capacity of 52,305 spectators, it is the largest stadium in northeast England and the seventh largest in the Premier League.
Throughout its history, St. James’ Park has undergone several significant renovations. Between 1998 and 2000, double tiers were added to the Milburn and Sir John Hall stands, reaching its current capacity. In addition to hosting Newcastle United matches, the stadium has been the venue for international events, including matches of the 1996 European Championship and events during the 2012 Olympic Games.
Recently, the club has considered options to increase the stadium’s capacity. One proposal involves expanding St. James’ Park to hold 60,000 spectators, while another suggests building a new 70,000-seat stadium in Leazes Park. These proposals aim to boost matchday revenues and comply with the Premier League sustainability regulations.
The stadium has also been the setting for memorable celebrations. In March 2025, around 350,000 fans gathered to celebrate Newcastle United's victory in the Carabao Cup, their first domestic trophy in 70 years. The celebration included a parade on an open-top bus and highlighted the deep connection between the club and the local community.
