The Estádio da Madeira, also known as Estádio da Choupana, is the home of Clube Desportivo Nacional, located in the mountains north of Funchal, on the Portuguese island of Madeira. Inaugurated in 2000, it was built on a hillside with panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the city, on land that initially seemed unsuitable for a sports facility.
Originally called Estádio Engenheiro Rui Alves, in honor of the club's president, the stadium was renamed in 2007 to Estádio da Madeira, following an agreement with the regional government to promote the island. That same year, a new covered stand was added, increasing the capacity to 5,200 spectators. The stadium has two grandstands along the field, while the areas behind the goals are enclosed with high fences.
It is part of the Cidade Desportiva do CD Nacional, a complex that includes the Cristiano Ronaldo Campus Futebol, named after the famous player who developed at the club. This campus features three training fields, a hotel with 20 rooms, restaurant, sports bar, VIP lounge, auditorium, image laboratory, and a three-level parking lot with a capacity for 700 vehicles.
The stadium has been the stage for memorable moments, including matches against top Portuguese teams and European competitions. Its elevated location not only offers stunning views but also poses a logistical challenge due to variable weather conditions. Despite its modest size, the Estádio da Madeira is a symbol of Clube Desportivo Nacional's growth and ambition in Portuguese football.
