Stadium Information

Hillsborough Stadium is the home of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club since its opening in 1899. Located in the Owlerton suburb, northwest of Sheffield, England, the stadium has a capacity for 39,732 spectators.

Throughout its history, Hillsborough has hosted numerous notable events. In 1966, it was one of the host stadiums of the FIFA World Cup, hosting group stage matches and a quarter-final between West Germany and Uruguay. Additionally, in 1996, it hosted Euro '96 matches, establishing itself as a venue of international relevance.

However, the stadium is sadly known for the Hillsborough disaster that occurred on April 15, 1989, during an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. In that event, 97 Liverpool fans lost their lives due to a human crush caused by inadequate crowd management and failures in security measures. This incident led to significant reforms in stadium safety in the UK, including converting terraces into seats and removing perimeter fences.

Currently, Hillsborough maintains its traditional structure with four distinctive stands: the South Stand, the North Stand, the West Stand (known as Leppings Lane End), and the Kop Stand. Each offers a unique perspective of the pitch and contributes to the vibrant atmosphere that characterizes the stadium. In addition to Sheffield Wednesday matches, the stadium has been used for international events and concerts, being an integral part of the Sheffield community.
