The Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez Stadium, located in Barranquilla, Colombia, is one of the most emblematic sports venues in the country and in South America. Inaugurated on May 11, 1986, it owes its name to the legendary Colombian footballer Roberto “El Flaco” Meléndez, considered one of the pioneers of national soccer. With an approximate capacity of 46,788 spectators, it is the largest stadium in Colombia in terms of capacity, and a symbol of the Colombian Caribbean.

This stadium is the home of Atlético Junior, one of the historical clubs in Colombian football, and has also been the regular venue for the Colombian National Team during their World Cup qualifying matches. The warmth and passion of the fans from Barranquilla have turned it into a real fortress, being nicknamed by many as the “Colossus of the Citadel”. It has hosted important international events such as the 2001 Copa America, where Colombia was undefeated champion, as well as multiple finals of the local tournament.

Its architecture stands out for its oval-shaped structure, without an athletics track, allowing for direct proximity between the public and the playing field. In 2020, it underwent a significant renovation with the aim of being one of the venues for the 2021 Copa America (an event that was later relocated), modernizing its dressing rooms, boxes, accesses, and LED lighting system. The stadium also has the Museum of Colombian Caribbean Soccer, a cultural initiative that highlights the history of sports in the region.

In addition to its sports function, the Metropolitano has been the scene of concerts and massive events. For Colombians, it is much more than a stadium: it is a symbol of national identity and the cradle of historic feats of tricolor football.
