The Monumental Stadium “U”, also known as Monumental de Ate, is the largest stadium in Peru and one of the most impressive in South America. Located in the district of Ate, in Lima, it is owned by Club Universitario de Deportes, which inaugurated it on July 2, 2000 with a 2-0 victory over Sporting Cristal. The design was carried out by the Uruguayan architect Walter Lavalleja, and its construction was done according to the FIFA Technical Specifications Manual for stadiums of the new millennium.
With an official capacity of 80,093 spectators, which can be expanded to 85,000 in special events, the Monumental is the second football stadium with the highest capacity in South America, surpassed only by the Maracaná in Rio de Janeiro. Its structure includes four stands (north, south, east, and west), over a thousand private boxes, corporate suites, press boxes, and a club museum opened in 2023, showcasing trophies, historic jerseys, and other emblematic elements of the institution.
The stadium has been the stage for highly relevant sports events, including the single final of the Copa Libertadores 2019, where Flamengo defeated River Plate 2-1 in front of over 78,000 spectators. Additionally, it has hosted matches of the Peruvian national team and local football classics between Universitario and Alianza Lima. Its versatility has also allowed it to host important international concerts, with performances by artists such as Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Guns N’ Roses, and Roger Waters, among others.
The Monumental stands out not only for its capacity and modernity but also for its integration into the urban and cultural fabric of Lima. Its strategic location and accessibility make it a meeting point for sports, cultural, and religious events, establishing itself as a symbol of sports and culture in Peru.
