The Den is the football stadium located in Bermondsey, in southeast London, which serves as the home of Millwall Football Club since 1993. This venue, with a capacity for 20,146 spectators, stands as the sixth stadium in the club's history. Its construction took place in the area known as Senegal Fields, replacing the old The Den, which had been the home of Millwall for 83 years.
Designed to meet the recommendations of the Taylor Report after the Hillsborough tragedy, The Den was the first new stadium in England to be built with strict safety and crowd management measures in mind. Its official opening took place on August 4, 1993, with a friendly match against Sporting Lisbon, which ended in a 1-2 defeat for the home team.
The stadium consists of four main stands: the Dockers Stand (east), the Cold Blow Lane Stand (south), the west stand, and the north stand, the latter generally intended for visiting fans. Each of these sections pays tribute to different aspects of the club's rich history and tradition and its community.
In addition to hosting Millwall FC matches, The Den has been the venue for various sports and cultural events. For example, in 1994, it hosted a boxing match between Michael Bentt and Herbie Hide. It has also hosted international matches, such as the one played between Ecuador and Australia in 2014, which ended in an exciting 4-3 victory for the South Americans.
