The Kassam Stadium is home to the Oxford United Football Club since its opening in 2001. Located on Grenoble Road, on the outskirts of Oxford, England, the stadium is named after Firoz Kassam, former owner of the club and responsible for its construction. With a capacity of 12,500 spectators, it features an uncommon configuration: only three stands, leaving one end completely open.
The stadium structure includes the North Stand, divided between local and visiting fans with a capacity for 5,026 people; the East Stand, which houses the most passionate supporters of the local team and can accommodate 2,879 spectators; and the South Stand, which is the main stand, with 4,495 seats, and hosts the club offices, dressing rooms, and 28 glassed executive boxes. A distinctive feature is the reflective glass paneling at the main entrance, giving it a modern appearance.
Over the years, the Kassam Stadium has witnessed numerous prominent events, including rugby matches and concerts, such as Elton John's in 2006. Additionally, in 2021, the stadium was used as a mass vaccination center during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the stadium has also been the subject of local legends, such as the alleged gypsy curse that led the Oxford bishop to perform an exorcism in 2001, following a series of the team's defeats in its new home.
Currently, Oxford United faces uncertainty regarding its future at the Kassam Stadium, as the lease contract expires in 2026. The club has proposed the construction of a new 16,000-seat stadium in Kidlington, known as "The Triangle", with the aim of securing its continuity and growth. This project, which would include facilities such as a hotel, restaurant, and conference center, has encountered both support and opposition in the local community, and its development is subject to approval by the relevant authorities.
