The Estadio Inca Garcilaso de la Vega is an iconic sports venue located in the city of Cusco, Peru. Inaugurated in 1958, it has witnessed countless sports and cultural events throughout its history. Situated at an altitude of 3,362 meters above sea level, it is one of the highest stadiums in the world, posing an additional challenge for visiting teams due to lower oxygen pressure.
Originally, the stadium had a capacity for approximately 22,000 spectators. However, for the 2004 Copa America, it was expanded and renovated, now accommodating 42,056 seats. These improvements included the removal of the athletic track and the modernization of its facilities, establishing it as one of the country's main sports venues.
The stadium is home to the local clubs Cienciano, Cusco F.C., and Deportivo Garcilaso, teams that compete in the Peruvian First Division. In addition to hosting league matches, the Estadio Inca Garcilaso de la Vega has been the stage for important international competitions, such as the aforementioned 2004 Copa America, where the third-place match between Colombia and Uruguay was played.
