About Alejandro José Hernández Hernández

Alejandro José Hernández Hernández, born on November 10, 1982 in Arrecife, Lanzarote, is a Spanish football referee affiliated with the Las Palmas Referees Committee. He debuted in Segunda División B in the 2004-2005 season and moved up to Segunda División in 2007-2008. After five seasons in the silver category, he debuted in La Liga on August 20, 2012 in a match between Real Zaragoza and Real Valladolid, which ended 0-1 in favor of the visiting team.

Since January 2014, Hernández Hernández has been an international referee for FIFA, allowing him to officiate matches in European competitions and national team games.

Throughout his career, he has been involved in several controversial decisions. On April 2, 2016, he refereed his first El Clásico between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid at Camp Nou, which ended in a 1-2 victory for Real Madrid. Some of his decisions in that match sparked debate among fans and analysts.

In the 2024/2025 season, he has officiated high-profile matches, including the clash between Real Madrid and Getafe at Santiago Bernabéu on December 1, 2024. In that match, he awarded a penalty in favor of Real Madrid after Nyom fouled Rüdiger in a corner kick, strictly enforcing the warning protocol before penalizing the infringement.

Hernández Hernández is known for his communicative refereeing style, seeking to maintain fluid communication with players during the match. However, some of his decisions have sparked controversy, especially in high-pressure encounters. Despite this, his experience and track record have established him as one of the most recognized referees in Spanish football.
