Inaugurado en 1957, el estadio fue diseñado por el arquitecto José Gomes, en honor a quien lleva su nombre. Desde su apertura, ha sido la sede principal del Estrela da Amadora, club fundado en 1932, que ha experimentado diversas transformaciones a lo largo de su historia.

Con una capacidad para 9.288 espectadores y dimensiones de 105 x 68 metros, el estadio ha sido testigo de momentos significativos en el fútbol portugués. Uno de los hitos más destacados fue la victoria del Estrela da Amadora en la Taça de Portugal en 1990, al vencer al Farense por 2-0, lo que le permitió participar en competiciones europeas por primera vez. Además, el estadio acogió eventos de los Juegos de la Lusofonía en 2009, subrayando su importancia en el panorama deportivo nacional.

Tras la disolución del club original en 2011 debido a problemas financieros, el estadio permaneció cerrado durante varios años. En 2022, el Club Football Estrela da Amadora, sucesor del club original, adquirió el estadio por aproximadamente 2,25 millones de euros. Desde entonces, se han llevado a cabo numerosas renovaciones para modernizar las instalaciones y adaptarlas a las exigencias del fútbol profesional contemporáneo.
