Joshua Smith, born in Peterborough, England, in 1992, grew up in a family connected to refereeing. His father and grandfather were also referees, which influenced his decision to start this career from a very young age, at 14 years old. Before pursuing a professional refereeing career, he worked as a physical education teacher, combining his passion for sports with teaching.
Smith started in the lower divisions of English football and quickly rose through the ranks thanks to his consistent performance. In 2021, he made his debut in the English Football League (EFL) and, in 2023, he was promoted to the main referee in the Premier League, establishing himself as one of the youngest referees to reach this category in England.
Smith is recognized for his calm under pressure and his ability to communicate effectively with players, qualities he attributes to his teaching experience. Outside the field, he is a fan of running and participates in charity marathons.
