The National Stadium of Peru, also known as the Jose Diaz Stadium, is the country's main sports venue and is located in the district of Lima, in the Peruvian capital. Inaugurated on October 27, 1952, the stadium has a capacity for over 49,000 spectators and has been the stage for numerous sporting and cultural events throughout its history.
One of the most tragic moments in the stadium's history occurred on May 24, 1964, during a qualifying match for the Tokyo Olympics between Peru and Argentina. A controversial referee decision led to riots that resulted in a stampede, causing the death of over 300 people and leaving at least 4,000 injured, making it one of the worst tragedies in world football history.
The stadium has hosted important international tournaments, such as the Copa America in several editions, including 1953, 1957 and 2004. Additionally, it hosted the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2005 and was the main venue for the Pan American Games and Parapan American Games in 2019, highlighting its relevance in the continental sports field.
In terms of infrastructure, the National Stadium has undergone several renovations, the most recent one between 2009 and 2011, which included the modernization of its facilities and the expansion of its capacity. A distinctive feature of the stadium is the Tower of Homages, a 47-meter-high structure located in the north stands, which has become an architectural icon of Lima.
