The Red Bull Arena in Leipzig, formerly known as Zentralstadion, is one of the most modern and iconic stadiums in Germany. Inaugurated on November 17, 2004, it was built on the remains of the old Zentralstadion, which at the time was the largest stadium in the German Democratic Republic with a capacity for 100,000 spectators. The current design preserves part of the original structure, integrating the new stadium into the old embankment, giving it a unique and symbolic aesthetic.
With a current capacity of 47,800 spectators, the stadium has been the home of RB Leipzig since 2010. During European competitions, due to UEFA regulations, it is referred to as RB Arena. The venue has hosted important international events, including matches from the 2006 FIFA World Cup, the 2005 Confederations Cup, and more recently was one of the venues for Euro 2024, hosting four matches, including an exciting match between Portugal and Czech Republic.
One of the standout features of the stadium is its curved roof supported by lightweight arches, designed by IPL Ingenieurplanung Leichtbau GmbH. Additionally, it features a state-of-the-art LED lighting system that allows for impressive visual displays during night games. In 2021, significant improvements were made, including the expansion of VIP areas and the installation of new media areas, enhancing the experience for both fans and sports professionals.
The Red Bull Arena is not only a symbol of the football renaissance in eastern Germany, but also an example of how modernity can be respectfully integrated with history. Its evolution reflects the ambition of RB Leipzig and its commitment to providing a top-notch spectacle both on the field and in the stands.
