The Municipal Stadium of Braga, popularly known as “A Pedreira” due to its location in an old quarry, is a masterpiece of sports architecture located in Braga, Portugal. Inaugurated in 2003, it was designed by the renowned Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, who was awarded the Pritzker Prize in part for this innovative creation.
This stadium stands out for its unique design: instead of the traditional four stands surrounding the field, it has two parallel side stands, while the ends are open, offering a stunning view of the quarry rock walls on one side and panoramic views of the city on the other. The stands are covered by a suspended roof structure, inspired by ancient Inca bridges, supported by steel cables, creating a light and elegant aesthetic.
With a capacity for 30,286 spectators, the stadium is home to Sporting Clube de Braga and has hosted highly relevant events, including matches of the 2004 UEFA European Championship. During this tournament, it hosted two group stage matches: Bulgaria vs. Denmark and Netherlands vs. Latvia.
Due to its harmonious integration into the landscape and its avant-garde design, the Municipal Stadium of Braga has been admired internationally, being considered one of the most emblematic sports structures in the world.
