The Wohninvest Weserstadion, located in Bremen, Germany, is the home of SV Werder Bremen and one of the most iconic stadiums in the country. Situated on the Weser river, its history dates back to 1909, when it opened as a modest field with a wooden stand. Over the decades, it has undergone multiple renovations, with the most significant one between 2008 and 2011, which transformed the venue into a modern football-exclusive arena. Since 2019, it bears the current name thanks to a sponsorship deal with the real estate company Wohninvest, although this contract will end in June 2024 due to the company's insolvency.
With a capacity of 42,100 spectators for domestic matches and 37,441 for international competitions, the stadium stands out for its rectangular design, a result of removing the athletics track in 2002 and reconfiguring the stands. One of its most notable features is the installation of solar panels on the roof and facade, generating up to 840,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, making it a benchmark in energy sustainability.
The stadium houses the Wuseum, the official museum of Werder Bremen, where trophies, photographs, and historical club items are exhibited. Additionally, it has been the venue for important events, including concerts by artists such as Michael Jackson and Metallica, and sporting competitions like the German Athletics Championships and matches of the German national football team.
Regarding its infrastructure, it has 70 VIP boxes, a large stand for approximately 700 people, and 127 spaces adapted for people with reduced mobility. The stadium is illuminated by four 61-meter high masts, although it is planned that by 2025 a LED lighting system will be installed on the edge of the roof to meet modern standards, while keeping the masts.
