The Wörthersee Stadium, known for sponsorship reasons as 28 Black Arena, is located in Klagenfurt, Austria, and is home to the SK Austria Klagenfurt club. Located in the Sportpark Klagenfurt sports complex, its name refers to the nearby Wörthersee lake.
The original stadium was inaugurated in 1960 with a capacity of 10,900 spectators. With a view to the 2008 European Championship, it was demolished in 2005 and rebuilt between 2006 and 2007, resulting in a modern facility with a capacity for 32,000 people. During the tournament, it hosted three group stage matches.
One of the most outstanding features of the Wörthersee Stadium is its versatility. In addition to sports events, it has been the venue for notable artistic initiatives. In 2019, it hosted the artistic installation “For Forest” by the artist Klaus Littmann, where a forest of 300 trees was planted on the field, symbolizing a reflection on the relationship between nature and humanity.
In July 2022, the stadium adopted the name 28 Black Arena due to a sponsorship agreement with the energy drink company 28 Black. With a capacity of 30,000 spectators for international matches and 18,000 for national league games, the stadium continues to be a landmark in Austrian sports and culture.
