The Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, opened on September 13, 1931, is a multifunctional stadium located in Saint-Étienne, France. Popularly known as “Le Chaudron” (The Cauldron) or “L’enfer vert” (The Green Hell), nicknames that reflect the passion of AS Saint-Étienne fans, the team that has called this stadium home since its opening.
Originally, the stadium had a capacity of around 1,000 spectators and featured an athletics track. Over the years, it has undergone multiple renovations, especially before major events like the 1984 European Championship, the 1998 FIFA World Cup, and the 2016 European Championship. Following the latest renovation completed in 2014, the stadium offers a seating capacity of 41,965 seats.
The Stade Geoffroy-Guichard has hosted numerous high-level sports events, including matches from the 2007 Rugby World Cup and the 2023 Rugby World Cup. Additionally, during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, it hosted football matches, further solidifying its reputation as a versatile and internationally important venue.
The stadium is named after Geoffroy Guichard, founder of the Casino retail group, who acquired the land where the stadium was built in 1930. Despite the numerous renovations, the stadium has kept its “English-style” design, with separate stands and no corners, contributing to its unique and vibrant atmosphere during matches.
