Tobias Stieler, born on July 2, 1981 in Obertshausen, Germany, is a German football referee with a prominent career in both national and international competitions. He started his refereeing career in 2004 and made his Bundesliga debut in 2012. Since 2014, he has been part of the FIFA referees list.
In the 2024/2025 season, Stieler has officiated several important matches. On September 9, 2024, he refereed the UEFA Nations League match between France and Belgium, which ended with a 2-0 victory for the French. In this match, he showed 4 yellow cards.
On January 21, 2025, he was appointed to referee the UEFA Champions League group stage match between AC Milan and Girona FC, marking a milestone in the Spanish team's participation in the competition.
Stieler is known for his precise refereeing style and his ability to handle high-tension matches. However, in November 2024, during a match between Club Brugge and Aston Villa, he made a controversial decision by awarding a penalty when Tyrone Mings handled a short goalkeeper pass, sparking debate on the application of common sense in such situations.
Outside the football field, Stieler resides in Hamburg and works as a lawyer, demonstrating remarkable professional versatility.
